How To Prevent Roaches From Taking Over Your Storage Unit

Posted on: 25 March 2015

If you live in an area that roaches are commonly found in, take some steps to prevent them from moving into your storage unit. By doing so, your household items will remain intact and you won't have to worry about transporting pests to your home as you move items in and out of your unit.

Clean With Orange Oil

Orange oil is a natural repellent that is commonly used to distract a variety of pests. It is also a pleasant smelling cleaner that can be used to freshen up furniture, appliances, and other household items. Spray a small amount of orange oil on any non-porous surfaces that are in your unit. Use a lint-free cloth to rub the cleaning mixture on each one. Orange oil is non-toxic and won't leave behind any residue. Your possessions will look great and will be ready for use when you move them out of your unit.

Keep Items Covered

Keeping items covered will reduce the risk of roaches taking up residence inside of your unit. Drape plastic sheeting over clean appliances and furniture. Secure it with bungee cords. Place items in plastic containers that have lids. Avoid using cardboard boxes to store items. Roaches are known to consume cardboard and can hide under the flaps in boxes.

Put the plastic containers on an elevated platform to prevent pests from hiding under them. Wooden pallets will work well for this step. Stack two or three pallets on top of each other and line the containers across the top.

Place Catnip In Containers And Near The Walls

Catnip is an herb that is completely safe to use when preventing roaches. It is a natural repellent that will deter pests from entering your unit. Put a small amount of this item in the bottom of small planters or bowels. Place each one in the corners of your unit. Sprinkling a trail of this herb around the walls of your unit is another method that will work. The scent that is emitted from catnip will drive away roaches if they approach your unit.

All of the above methods are simple to use and effective in preventing roaches. You will not have to invest much money to complete any of them. Your belongings will be safe and secure in your unit at a facility like Falmouth Self Storage for the length of time that they are stored. Consider using these methods at your home, as well, to keep roaches away.
